What Are the Different Types of Dark Circles?

Dark circles can appear as pigmentation, hollowness, thin skin visibility, or puffiness-related shadows. Identifying the exact type helps in choosing the most effective treatment.

1. Dark Pigment

Dark pigmentation under the eyes occurs due to excess melanin production, often triggered by genetics, sun exposure, hormonal changes, or frequent eye rubbing, leading to brown or dark under-eye circles.

2. Weak Skin

Thin, fragile under-eye skin allows blood vessels and shadows to show through easily.

3. Lack of Bone Support

Weak orbital bone structure creates hollows that cast shadows under the eyes.

4. Excess Skin

Loose or sagging under-eye skin forms folds that deepen the appearance of dark circles.

5. Hollowness / Volume Loss

Hollowness or volume loss under the eyes occurs due to ageing, fat loss, or reduced collagen, causing sunken tear troughs that create shadows and make dark circles appear deeper and more tired.

6. Visible Veins

Prominent blue or purple veins show through thin skin, giving a dark under-eye look.

7. Puffiness

Under-eye puffiness occurs when fluid retention, fat pad displacement, or poor lymphatic drainage causes swelling around the eyes. It is often triggered by lack of sleep, excess salt intake, allergies, stress, and ageing. The swelling creates shadows beneath the eyes, making dark circles appear deeper and more noticeable. Persistent puffiness can make the eyes look tired, aged, and less refreshed.

8. Deep-Set Eyes

Naturally deep-set eyes create constant shadows, making under-eyes appear darker.

9. Eyebrow Hooding

Drooping brows increase shadowing over the under-eye area.

10. Small Eyes

Small eye shape can make the surrounding under-eye area look darker by enhancing natural shadows, causing dark circles to appear more prominent and the eyes to look tired or sunken.
